Product Description
Grade 2 Titanium Strip Production Process
Grade 2 titanium strip is usually supplied in cold worked and heat treated conditions. The base material for production is titanium sponge, which is obtained by reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert gas atmosphere. The titanium sponge is pressed into long electrodes and subsequently fed into a vacuum arc remelting furnace to produce titanium ingots. The titanium ingots are further processed to obtain titanium slabs required for the next rolling process.
 
Titanium slabs are first hot rolled at high temperatures on a tandem mill or a Steckel mill. After multiple hot rolling operations, titanium coils with a thickness of 2.8 to 3.5 mm are obtained. The hot rolled titanium coils will be annealed and cleaned by subsequent sandblasting and pickling processes to remove the surface oxide layer. The finished coils are then fed to the cold rolling mill. Through multiple cold rolling operations, thinner titanium coils with a thickness of 0.03 to 1.50 mm can be obtained. After the final heat treatment, the cold rolled titanium coils can be cut horizontally or vertically to produce flat strips or split coils, respectively.
 
The final heat treatment of Grade 2 titanium strip or coil should be annealed in a continuous inert gas or vacuum atmosphere. The main purpose of annealing is to fully recrystallize the titanium strip to obtain uniform grain size and mechanical properties. Titanium grade 2 strip or coil should be degreased and cleaned before annealing. It should be heated to a temperature between 650°C and 700°C in a protective or vacuum atmosphere, kept at this temperature for 2.5~4.5 hours, and then gradually cooled under the same furnace conditions.
